School Counselor FAQs

When are VirtualSC courses offered?

VirtualSC offers courses during the Fall, Spring, and Summer. Please check our Dates and Deadlines for more information.

Do student course requests need to be approved by a Counselor?

Yes, each student’s course request must be approved by their School Counselor within 72 hours. If not, the request will expire and the student will need to submit the request the again.

How can I create my VirtualSC Counselor account?

Counselor accounts must be created by the School Sponsor account.  Click here to find a step-by-step tutorial.

Will I be able to track student progress?

Yes, Counselors will have access to student progress in the VirtualSC Dashboard.

Who administers final exams for VirtualSC students?

Each sponsor school must provide a proctor and space for final exams based upon the VirtualSC exam schedule. All proctors must have current teacher licensure and may not be a relative of the student.

Do quizzes and assignments need to be proctored as well?

No, coursework including assignments and quizzes may be completed in any location where the student has access to a computer and internet. Only the final exam for the course is proctored at the student’s school.

Will I receive notifications from VirtualSC teachers?

Yes, teachers may contact you regarding a student’s performance,  if necessary.

What types of courses does VirtualSC offer?

VirtualSC offers AP, Honors, College Prep, and Credit Recovery courses. Please visit the Course Catalog for a complete listing of courses.

What does it mean when a student is listed as Active?

When you see a student listed under your “Students” tab, it means that they have selected you as their counselor. When you see the term “active” next to the student’s name, it means that their account is currently usable; this does not mean that they are enrolled in a course.

To check the enrollment status of a student, click on their name and select “Schedule” to view their current courses.

If I had an account in the old VSA system, do I need to create a new account to use the VirtualSC Dashboard?

Yes, you will need to create a new account.  Accounts that were active in the VSA system did not carry over to the new VirtualSC Dashboard.  This includes all users: students, counselors and parents.

For instructions on how to create your new account, please check the Tutorials page.

What happens when a student withdraws from my school?

When a student taking a VirtualSC course withdraws from or transfers out of your school, you should notify VirtualSC Student Services immediately.  Student Services will need to hear from the student’s new counselor so that the account can be re-assigned to the new school. If the student does not enroll in another school or Adult Education program in South Carolina, he/she will be withdrawn from their course(s).

One of my students has an IEP or 504 plan. How can I make sure that the teacher will receive the accommodations document?

The procedure for submitting accommodations documents has changed with our new VirtualSC Dashboard system; accommodations documents must now be uploaded directly into a student’s file.  Please note that our student information system is heavily secured, and these documents can only be viewed by the school counselor, the teacher, and our VirtualSC counselor.

Some districts may require our program to submit an official request for records to the district office before the IEP or 504 documents can be uploaded; our program can meet that requirement. For more information on this process, please contact our VirtualSC Counselor, Katina Montgomery, kmontgomery@ed.sc.gov.

How many VirtualSC courses can a student take?

There is not a limit on the number of courses that a student can take with VirtualSC. However, students taking 3 or less courses per session tend to be more successful. This will vary by student.
